No fewer than thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
