New research reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
